HackerRank's Chakra AI Interviewer Goes Live—What Candidates Need to Know

HackerRank made its Chakra AI interviewer generally available in October 2026 after 500,000 beta interviews. The platform shifts hiring from testing outputs to evaluating reasoning, problem-solving, and how you work with AI.

The Launch: What Just Happened

HackerRank opened Chakra, an AI agent that runs technical job interviews, to its customers on October 7, 2026, after running 500,000 interviews before launch. Snowflake, Snorkel and Capgemini were among the companies that tried it during the six-month beta period.

This isn't a minor feature update. Chakra is an AI agent that conducts interviews, observes candidates as they work, and evaluates not just their answers but also how they got there. It represents a fundamental shift in how technical hiring works.

How Chakra Actually Works

Candidates work in a real code repository rather than an isolated puzzle. Chakra watches developers code in a live repository, lets them use AI and asks follow-up questions. Candidates may use AI tools while they work. Chakra then judges how well they use them.

According to Vivek Ravisankar, Chakra can combine an initial screening, a practical task, and a conversation with an engineer in a single interview. One session can combine a recruiter screen, a take-home task, and an engineer follow-up—three steps employers may otherwise run separately.

The Evaluation Shift: From Answers to Reasoning

The core change: Instead of merely evaluating candidates based on correct answers, the AI interviewer focuses on the reasoning and problem-solving processes behind those answers. The goal is to assess judgment and "AI fluency": how people frame work for AI, evaluate its output, and steer it.

This means using AI is allowed in a Chakra interview, but you will be asked to defend what you accept from it. A correct answer you cannot explain may count against you.

What the Data Shows

HackerRank also says suspicious activity was detected 70–80% less often in these interviews compared to traditional coding tests. Suspicious-activity flags dropped by 70 to 80 percent compared to legacy coding tests, with the reduction varying by region and seniority level.

What This Means for Job Hunters

If you're interviewing with a company using Chakra, preparation looks different. You can't memorize solutions or hide behind perfect code. You need to be able to explain your problem-solving approach, defend your use of AI, and articulate why you made each decision.

Chakra looks at how well you work with AI ("AI fluency") and digs into your decision-making, not just what answer you land on. Practice thinking out loud about trade-offs, constraints, and how you'd iterate if requirements changed.

While Chakra scores candidates, humans still make the final call on who gets hired. The AI's output is a signal, not a verdict.
