That's a $25K floor difference, and it widens at senior levels: AI staff engineers earn 18.7% more than non-AI peers. The 15–25% internal AI premium documented sits alongside a 56–58% premium when comparing AI-specific roles to non-AI roles across the broader market.

Layoffs Accelerated in 2026—But Hiring Continues

The number of fully in-office roles rose from 65% in Q4 2025 to 87% in Q2 2026. This shift suggests that, after several years of announcing changes to remote and hybrid policies, many companies have now implemented their return-to-office plans. Still, since 2020, the vast majority of workers have consistently expressed a strong preference for remote and hybrid work over being in the office full-time.
