About the role
- Billing is mission-critical to Render's success.
- Every service, database, and workload that runs on Render ends up on an invoice, and customers trust us to get that invoice right.
- how usage is captured, how it flows through our data pipelines and third-party billing platforms, and how it lands as a correct charge.
Responsibilities
- Lead and grow the Billing engineering team, which owns how Render turns platform usage into accurate charges: usage capture, data pipelines, third-party billing platforms (Orb, Metronome, Stripe, or similar), and invoicing
- Own the roadmap for Render's billing systems, from usage metering through invoicing, reconciliation, and financial reporting
- Partner with Finance, Product, and Customer Experience to align the roadmap with pricing, reporting, and customer needs
- Hire and develop engineers to support planned team growth, while keeping the team's focus clear as billing scope expands
- Build a strong performance management and career development practice for a team that includes senior ICs
- Proven experience building and scaling teams, ideally growing a group from a handful of engineers into a larger org
- We will also work with you to create a supportive plan of return.
Requirements
- Comfort operating in ambiguity, with adaptability and a growth mindset
- Experience managing engineers
- Hands-on experience with usage-based billing, payments, or other revenue-critical systems, including third-party platforms like Orb, Metronome, or Stripe
- Strong business instincts, with the ability to connect engineering investment to billing accuracy, revenue, and customer trust
- What matters is experience and ability to operate in a fast-paced environment
- Experience leading a billing platform migration or a pricing model change.
- Familiarity with financial reconciliation and reporting processes.
