About the role

  • Element Science, Inc. is a medical device and digital health company redefining how patients with heart disease are monitored and treated as they transition from the hospital to the home.
  • This is a hybrid role based in our San Francisco office, with a planned transition to our Redwood City, CA office within the year.
  • Mentor junior engineers as the team size grows.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver board-level designs including analysis, schematics, and PCB layout for Class III products with sensitive analog front-end circuits, sensors, power, and high voltage.
  • Lead electrical design work-streams within multi-disciplinary projects, ensuring scope, schedule, and deliverables are met.
  • Drive technical decision-making, balancing performance, cost, manufacturability, and regulatory requirements.
  • Develop and characterize designs through bench testing, system integration, and the creation of supporting test fixtures.
  • Qualify critical alternate components as necessary that meet design needs.
  • Perform failure analysis and document investigations to support manufacturing scale.
  • Sustaining engineering efforts: Develop designs with components selected for cost reduction or obsolescence, and support qualifying alternate suppliers.
  • Dry-run engineering tests and conduct / guide design verification test protocols.
  • Support EMC/EMI testing and compliance activities, including preparation, execution, and troubleshooting to ensure designs meet applicable IEC standards such as IEC 60601.
  • Document design descriptions and engineering analysis to support Manufacturing and Quality.

Requirements

  • Experience with board bring-up, debug, and integration of embedded systems including ability to modify and compile C code for microcontrollers to support hardware testing.
  • Experience working directly with fab and assembly CMs.
  • Experience with Altium, PADs, or other ECAD tools, PCB, FPC, and rigid-flex design and layout standards.
  • Familiarity with electrical safety standards and HV isolation.
  • Experience with circuit and system simulation techniques desired.
  • In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required employment eligibility verification form upon hire.
  • MSEE or BSEE with at least 10+ years of analog electronics design experience.
  • Electrical design, test, and sustaining experience for products with microprocessors, FPGAs, analog, and high-voltage electronics.
  • Good understanding of product life cycle(s) management from concept through production including manufacturing follow up. DFM, DFT.
  • Power electronics design experience. Familiarity with component and PCB/FPC design practice for up to 2000V.
  • Familiarity with medical standards and verification to those standards and QMS for Class III medical devices.
  • Familiarity with low power circuit design techniques.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Nice to have

  • Preferred knowledge of digital signal processing concepts for electrophysiology and other sensor data.
  • Preferred experience with project leadership, including coordination with multiple disciplines from concept through manufacturing transfer.

Compensation

  • $170,000-$185,000
  • The salary for this exempt-level position will be based on experience and qualifications within an established pay range.
  • Salary Range: $170,000-$185,000

  • The Staff Electrical Engineer will lead the design, development, verification and validation of complex Class III medical device electronics, from concept through manufacturing transfer.
