About the role

  • Senior Director, Environment, Water, and Justice Branch.
  • About the AFN The AFN is an advocacy organization, taking direction and fulfilling mandates as directed by First Nations in-Assembly through resolutions.
  • The AFN was created out of a desire among First Nations leadership for a strong and effective collective advocacy organization.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the planning, development, and implementation of initiatives within the Environment, Water, and Justice Branch.
  • Develop and execute strategies to support AFN's national advocacy efforts in First Nations environment, water and justice.
  • Build and maintain strong, positive relationships with First Nations leaders, government officials, and external partners at the national, regional, and community levels.
  • Oversee the development and delivery of policy reports, proposals, and other key documents for internal and external audiences.
  • Collaborate with AFN branches and external partners to promote policy initiatives and ensure alignment with AFN's priorities.

Requirements

  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Lead and support the coordination of AFN Assemblies, political engagements, and other events as required.
  • Primarily office-based with travel required for AFN Assemblies, political meetings, and engagement sessions across Canada.
  • Education and Experience:
  • Advanced research, analytical, and critical thinking skills, with the ability to develop clear, actionable policy recommendations.
  • Strong leadership skills, with the ability to manage a diverse team and work effectively with senior management.
  • Superior interpersonal and negotiation skills, with a demonstrated ability to build relationships and influence key stakeholders.

Nice to have

  • University Degree in Environmental Science, Justice or Law, Political Science, Public Policy or Administration, Indigenous Studies, or a related field.
  • A postgraduate degree in a relevant field is preferred.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of senior management experience in a relevant field, with a strong track record of leadership in First Nations or governmental contexts.
  • In-depth knowledge of First Nations issues, environment, water, and justice priorities.
  • Proven experience in working with First Nations governments, organizations, or advocacy groups.
  • Experience in managing complex projects and leading cross-functional teams.
  • Strong understanding of the political, legal, and public policy frameworks affecting First Nations communities.

Skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with experience drafting high-level reports, proposals, and presentations.
  • Proven political acumen and the ability to navigate complex and sensitive political environments with diplomacy and tact.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and project management tools.
  • Qualified persons of First Nations Ancestry will be given preference in accordance with s.16(1) of the Canadian Human Rights Act.
