About the role
- To provide leadership, organization, and supervision for the Sussex Central High School varsity cheerleading program.
Responsibilities
- Teach and develop cheerleading fundamentals, including motions, jumps, stunts, tumbling, crowd-leading techniques, choreography, and performance skills appropriate to student-athlete ability levels.
- Develop and implement routines and performances for athletic events, pep rallies, school functions, and VHSL-sanctioned competitions.
- Maintain accurate records of athlete eligibility, attendance, competition requirements, and VHSL documentation.
- Coordinate fundraising activities and team-building opportunities in accordance with school division guidelines.
- Manage team equipment, uniforms, inventory, ordering, maintenance, and storage.
Requirements
- Demonstrated knowledge of cheerleading fundamentals, stunt progression, competition preparation, and safety regulations.
- Familiarity with VHSL rules, eligibility requirements, and cheerleading compliance standards.
- Travel required for away games, competitions, and team events.
- Strong leadership, communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- Compliance with all background checks, school division hiring requirements, and VHSL coaching certifications.
- Work Conditions:
- Practices, games, competitions, camps, and events held after school, evenings, weekends, and school holidays.
- Seasonal stipend position (supplemental contract) unless otherwise assigned additional duties.
- Indoor and outdoor work environments require extended periods of standing, physical activity, and active supervision.
- Performance Standards:
- Full compliance with VHSL regulations and Sussex County Public Schools policies regarding eligibility, safety, and ethical conduct.
- Establishes and maintains a positive, inclusive, and disciplined team culture focused on excellence and school pride.
Nice to have
- Experience coaching and/or participating in cheerleading at the high school level or higher preferred.
- Teaching certification preferred (may vary by school division).
