About the role
- 4 or 8-month placement starting September 2026
- Ciena is seeking a highly motivated intern to join our Routing/IP Software Development team.
Responsibilities
- This role involves contributing to the design, development, and testing of software for advanced routing and IP solutions within Ciena's network products.
- Collaborate with experienced engineers to design, implement, and debug software for routing protocols (e.g., Segment Routing, OSPF, BGP, ISIS, MPLS) and IP functionalities.
- Support implementation and testing of Segment Routing features, including SR-MPLS and SRv6, with focus on scale, resiliency, and traffic engineering.
- Develop and execute unit tests and integration tests to ensure software quality and reliability.

Requirements
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
- Strong understanding of fundamental networking concepts, including TCP/IP, routing protocols, and network topologies.
- Familiarity with software development tools (e.g., Git, debuggers).
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Knowledge of Ethernet services, IPv4/IPv6, EVPN, TiLFA, or other transport protocols.
- Experience with Linux/Unix operating systems.
Skills
- Participate in code reviews, ensuring adherence to coding standards and best practices.
- Troubleshoot and debug routing protocol and service issues under the guidance of senior engineers.
- Document design specifications, test plans, and software functionalities.
- Research and evaluate new technologies and industry standards related to routing and IP.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives within the software development lifecycle.
- Strong programming skills in C and Python
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
