About the role

Requirements

  • Associates Degree in Veterinary Technology
  • Must have a Veterinary Technician Associates degree from an accredited school
  • Euthanasia Certification must be obtained within 3 months of hire
  • When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the City, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel.
  • Applicants selected for safety-sensitive positions are required to complete and pass a drug screening as a condition of employment.

Nice to have

  • Shelter and or high volume spay/neuter experience preferred
  • At least (2) years experience as a Veterinary Technician in surgery, animal care and handling
  • Current veterinary standards and practices, dog and cat breed characteristics and knowledge of standard contagion practices in a shelter environment.
  • Animal behavior and using positive reinforcement techniques to interact with shelter animals.
  • Vaccination guidelines

Skills

  • Practical application of theoretical knowledge. Capabilities or proficiencies developed through training or hands-on experience.
  • Possess safe animal handling and restraint techniques, including feral cats and aggressive dogs.
  • Competent in IV injection, catheter placement, and calculating fluid and drug doses based on Veterinarian recommendation
  • Skills and experience needed to practice anesthesia at an advanced level of competency
  • Data entry of medical records and logging of controlled substances and medical treatments
  • Skill in the use of Chameleon and windows-based programs
  • Strong customer service skills
  • Skill in checking information for accuracy and completeness and correcting errors
  • Multitasking
  • Handle sensitive situations with tact and diplomacy
  • Provide humane care and treatment for a variety of animals

Compensation

  • The full salary range for a currently licensed Veterinary Technician is $26.00 - $33.33 per hour.
  • F or candidates who are waiting to sit the Veterinary Technician License exam, the salary range begins at $23.00 - $26.67 per hour.
