About the role
- We're seeking a Staff+ Software Engineer to own the backend architecture and scaling of our clinician-facing provider platform.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and maintain backend services, APIs, and data models that power clinician workflows, reporting, and internal tools.
- Own the scalability, reliability, and performance of backend systems and data pipelines in production.
- Define and evolve the backend architecture, including API design standards, data modeling patterns, and system interoperability across teams.
- Lead technical design for complex, cross-functional initiatives, partnering with product, design, and engineering stakeholders to deliver scalable solutions.
- Act as a technical leader and force multiplier by unblocking engineers, driving design reviews, and raising the overall engineering bar across the team.
- Partner closely with front-end engineers to ensure seamless integration of backend services into clinician-facing products and internal tools.
- This is a high-ownership IC role where you will define technical direction for core backend systems, not just implement features.
- You'll act as a technical leader across multiple engineers and teams, setting patterns for APIs, data modeling, and system design that others build on.
- We bring together world-class clinicians, technologists, and autism specialists to build cutting-edge AI tools that help care teams work smarter and spend more time with the children and families who need them most.
Requirements
- 7+ years of professional software engineering experience, with a strong backend focus.
- Experience operating at a Staff+ level, influencing technical direction and architecture across teams without formal authority.
- Strong proficiency in Python, Node.js, or similar backend technologies, with solid experience in relational and/or NoSQL databases and API design.
- Comfort working in ambiguous, fast-moving environments and turning loosely defined problems into scalable technical systems.
- Proven ability to design and scale backend systems, APIs, and data platforms that serve multiple products or business units.
- Strong system design experience, including distributed systems, data modeling, and tradeoffs around reliability, scalability, and performance.
- Experience building and owning production-grade backend services end-to-end, from database design through APIs and integrations.
- Healthcare or regulated environment experience (e.g., HIPAA/PHI) is a bonus, but not required.
- We are open to candidates across multiple levels for this role. Final level and compensation will be determined through the interview process based on experience, technical depth, and scope.
