Requirements

  • Experience and Knowledge:
  • Minimum 1-year experience in an institutional or commercial kitchen.
  • Knowledge of food preparation, quantity of food to prepare to minimize wastage and sanitation procedures
  • Willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army's health and safety policies and procedures.
  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Food Safe Handling Certificate
  • Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Check that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion.

Skills

  • Reliability and punctuality are essential
  • Able to observe all safety precautions and safe work practices.
  • Able to work as relief cook when called upon.
  • Working with sharp tools/utensils daily.
  • Certificate in culinary skills is an added advantage

  • Job Description:
  • For more than 130 years, The Salvation Army has served people in need in communities across Canada and Bermuda.
  • Prepares food for residents, guests and for catered functions according to established menu rotation.
  • Reviews menus and makes suggestions for changes, to the Support Services Manager, in consultation with caregiving staff.
  • Coordinates food preparation and service in the kitchen.
  • Stores perishable food and avoids waste as per established guidelines.
  • Advises the Support Services Manager of inventory needs for kitchen equipment & utensils and assists in the purchasing of items.
  • Checks accuracy and presentation of served food
  • Checks menu items and recommendations as required.
  • Participates in department and Quality Improvement activities.
  • Informs Support Services Manager of unsafe equipment or conditions and food supply concerns (e.g. Food shortages, food quality concerns, supply availability.)
  • Performs all cleaning duties and ensures that Food Services area (storage, kitchen, dining room) are clean, orderly, and meet expected standards.
  • Ensure that all food service areas and equipment are maintained and in good working order. Report any deficiencies to the Support Services Manager.
  • Completes written reports, as required.
  • Attends meetings and workshops/inservices.
