About the role

  • The Material Control and Accounting (MC&A) Specialist leads the nuclear material safeguards program at Valar Atomics TRISO manufacturing facilities.
  • This position is responsible for ensuring the accurate accounting, control, and protection of special nuclear material (SNM) in compliance with Department of Energy (DOE) and Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and maintain the MC&A Plan and associated procedures.
  • Manage material balance areas (MBAs) to ensure accurate material tracking.
  • Maintain nuclear material accounting records and documentation in accordance with regulatory requirements.
  • Implement requirements of NE O Order 470.4B (Safeguards and Security Program).
  • Support compliance with International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Additional Protocol requirements where applicable.
  • Prepare for and support regulatory inspections, audits, and assessments.
  • Implement and maintain tamper-indicating device (TID) programs for material protection.
  • Manage the measurement control program including calibration, quality control, and uncertainty quantification.
  • Apply knowledge of non-proliferation principles to safeguards program design and implementation.
  • Support DOE/ NRC assessments, surveys, and vulnerability analyses.

Requirements

  • Experience in nuclear material control and accounting or nuclear safeguards.
  • Experience at a site handling Special Nuclear Material
  • Demonstrated knowledge of DOE/ NE O orders (474.2, 470.4B) and NRC regulations (10 CFR 74).
  • Experience with MC&A software systems and database management.
  • Familiarity with destructive assay (DA) and non-destructive assay (NDA) techniques.
  • Experience with statistical analysis, measurement uncertainty, and error propagation methods.
  • Strong understanding of nuclear material types, forms, and measurement techniques.
  • Knowledge of physical protection systems and their integration with MC&A
