About the role

Reporting to the Compute Program Scientist in the AI Institute, the Software Engineer will provide technical leadership and apply application development expertise across AI Institute and Schmidt Sciences multidisciplinary efforts.
The initial set of projects will focus on cutting-edge developments in AI.
Success for this role is defined by the quality of software components produced, and the impact of the programming contributions on the overall success of each project.

Science of AI - understanding and controlling AI systems to mitigate and manage potential risks from advanced AI.
These philanthropic efforts support experienced engineers who are tasked with building open-source infrastructure and applications for multi-disciplinary, high-performance, at-scale scientific discovery.

A successful candidate should have a work portfolio that reflects specific contributions to production-grade software products.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Analyze and assess model resource requirements, review operational plans (e.g., virtualization, cloud, etc.), and evaluate other technical opportunities.
Assist existing programs by providing software development expertise and mentorship, while working closely and collaboratively with multiple subject matter expert teams.
Participate in relevant industry events and forums, representing Schmidt Sciences' presence on AI and advanced computing issues.
A Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution, with a focus on Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related field.
Proficiency with software engineering tools and best practices.
Prior work with containerized Linux workloads, including GPU-accelerated configurations.
Basic knowledge of computer networking and distributed computing.
Experience producing technical writing for expert and general audiences.

Exposure to CPU/GPU/TPU acceleration techniques with popular SDKs (e.g., OpenCL, CUDA, ROCm, Cloud TPU).
