About the role

  • Housing for the Manager and immediate family is available for lease on the Whitney Preserve.
  • Through the efforts of The Nature Conservancy, over 188,000 acres in South Dakota have been preserved for people and nature.
  • From the grasslands to the wetlands, to forests and prairies, the MNDK (MN, ND, SD) Chapter is dedicated to conserving the natural resources that make our regions unique.

Responsibilities

  • private landowners, ranchers, conservation partners, government officials, donors, board members and the public to inspire support for the Conservancy's priorities.
  • Thanks to more than 1 million members, over 400 scientists, and the dedicated efforts of our diverse staff and partners, we impact conservation around the world!

Requirements

  • Familiarity with principles of land acquisition or similar asset acquisition.
  • Knowledge of ecological land management principles/restoration principles, including range management, wildlife management, invasive species ecology, livestock husbandry, and fire management.
  • Knowledge of current trends and practices in conservation, land management and natural resource preservation.
  • Experience negotiating agreements.
  • Experience with Fire/Fuels Reduction and managing woody encroachment.
  • Knowledge of flora and fauna of the Northern Great Plains and Black Hills.
  • Experience with GPS and GIS and data management.
  • Ability to obtain required licenses or certifications, such as first aid, CPR, herbicide application, and driver's license.
  • Ability to think creatively about how to leverage resources.
  • Experience managing or leading staff, volunteers, interns, or other teams.
  • Cross cultural experience appreciated.
  • Ability and willingness to apply science to decision-making and guide activities.
  • Ability to pass annual fitness test (carrying a 45-pound pack over 3 miles of level terrain in 45 minutes or less.)

Compensation

  • The starting pay range for a candidate selected for this position is generally within the range of $54,000 - $58,000.
  • Where a successful candidate's actual pay will fall within this range will be based on a variety of factors, including, for example, the candidate's location, qualifications, specific skills, and experience.
  • Please note countries outside the USA would have a different pay range in the local currency based on the local labor market, and not tied to USA pay or ranges.
