About the role
- As a Software Engineer II on the Newbook Websites team, you will contribute to the development and improvement of the WordPress-based websites that Newbook operators use to market their parks and take bookings online.
- You will work primarily in WordPress and PHP, backed by MySQL, with modern JavaScript, HTML, and CSS on the frontend
- You will be expected to bring both traditional software engineering discipline and modern AI-enabled execution.
Responsibilities
- Develop new features and improvements for the Newbook Websites product, building and maintaining custom WordPress themes, plugins, and integrations that connect operator websites to the Newbook platform and booking flows.
- Use AI-assisted development tools to accelerate coding, debugging, testing, refactoring, documentation, technical discovery, and design work.
- Build reliable frontend experiences with modern JavaScript, HTML, and CSS, applying React where appropriate for more interactive components.
- Collaborate with infrastructure and platform teams when application work touches CI/CD, AWS services, deployment workflows, monitoring, or reliability concerns.
- Collaborate with product managers, designers, support teams, and other engineers to translate business and customer needs into reliable technical solutions.
- Participate actively in collaborative development practices, including stand-ups, retrospectives, backlog refinement, and technical design discussions, and contribute to technical design documents for the work you own.
- Write and maintain unit, integration, and functional tests to ensure confidence in the systems we build.
Requirements
- Required: hands-on, production WordPress experience, including building and maintaining custom themes and/or plugins, working with WordPress hooks (actions and filters), the block editor, and the WordPress REST API.
- Some exposure to cloud infrastructure, CI/CD systems, AWS services, serverless functions, deployment workflows, or related infrastructure tooling is helpful, but not required.
- Good problem-solving skills and the ability to break down technical challenges into clear, executable steps.
- Help reduce technical debt through thoughtful refactoring and incremental improvements to the themes, plugins, and code you work in.
Nice to have
- Experience running WordPress at scale, including multisite, caching, and performance optimization.
- Experience with Advanced Custom Fields (ACF) and Gutenberg/block development
- Experience integrating WordPress with third-party APIs, booking engines, or payment providers.
- Experience modernizing legacy systems or incrementally refactoring older WordPress or PHP codebases.
- Experience working in SaaS products serving industry-specific operational workflows.
- Experience with point of sale, reservations, bookings, payments, customer management, or marketplace-style systems.
- Solid development experience with PHP and MySQL, plus modern JavaScript, HTML, and CSS on the frontend.
- Experience with TypeScript and React is a plus.
