Responsibilities

  • The Boring Company is revolutionizing urban transportation by building an underground network of tunnels to eliminate soul-crushing traffic.
  • As a field-based Mechanical Design Engineer, you will design and implement practical mechanical upgrades that help the tunnel boring machines operate safely, reliably, and efficiently in real-world field conditions.
  • This role blends hands-on field engineering with mechanical design work, including developing and integrating components such as sensor brackets, access hardware, valve handles, guards, mounts, fixtures, and other machine-interface hardware.
  • You will work directly on and around the machine to understand requirements, take measurements, develop concepts, validate fit and function, and support fabrication, installation, and iteration in the field.
  • Design, modify, and implement practical mechanical solutions for machine operations, including brackets, mounts, guards, handles, fixtures, support equipment, vehicle interfaces, and tunnel infrastructure components.
  • Work directly on and around the machine to take measurements, validate fit and function, test components, and execute rapid field iteration from concept through installation.
  • Collaborate with project, operations, and engineering teams to validate system behavior, provide field feedback, and ensure design decisions support top-level operational needs and future developments.
  • Use sound engineering judgment, hand calculations, CAD, and FEA as appropriate to develop, communicate, and document designs, design changes, field issues, and implemented solutions.
  • Support commissioning, maintenance, and daily equipment operation while ensuring systems meet performance, reliability, safety, schedule, and regulatory requirements.
  • Strong teamwork skills with a proven ability to effectively interact and collaborate with other engineering disciplines.

Requirements

  • Qualifications Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • 1+ years of experience in design, build and testing.
  • Proficiency using SolidWorks.
  • Basic proficiency in machine design.
