About the role
- Brookhaven National Laboratory's (BNL) Facilities & Operation (F&O) Directorate is looking for a driven and dedicated Stationary Engineer to join our Energy & Utilities Division, the team that keeps the Lab running 24/7/365!
- As a Stationary Engineer, you'll play a vital role in powering one of the world's leading research institutions.
- You'll begin on a steady day shift (Mon-Friday, 8am to 4pm) and after qualifying transition into a dynamic rotational schedule that ensures variety and challenge six days on, two days off, around the clock.
Responsibilities
- Maintain records and logbooks, of rounds and inspections performed.
- Perform routine and demand maintenance and repairs as necessary to keep the plant operating at optimal efficiency.
- Perform daily chemical test analysis of all operating systems such as boilers, water softeners, feedwater, and condensate systems.
- Ability to learn and maintain a thorough understanding of the operation and control of the boilers including computer control systems, instrumentation & controls, safety systems, water testing, functioning of the water softener, feed water pumps, condensate pumps, deaerators, fuel oil transfer pumps, air compressors, and steam pumps.
Requirements
- This is a union position and the successful applicant will be required to join IBEW Local 2230 and maintain membership within 30 days of their start date.
- This is due to nationwide identification requirements for federal site access as required by the federal REAL ID Act.
- Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- In lieu of above, a Bachelor of Science in marine engineering or similar technical degree

Skills
- Strong decision-making skills and the ability to respond to a complex set of circumstances.
- Must be able to read, write, and verbally communicate.
- The ability to work 8-hour rotating shifts and extended hours if necessary.
- Must have a valid NYS Driver's license.
- Knowledge of NFPA 85 - Boiler and Combustion Systems Hazards Code.
- Knowledge of boiler system corrosion control methods.
- Experience with fuel oil handling and spill control methods.
Compensation
- Perform daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual planned maintenance on boilers and auxiliary equipment as assigned.
