About the role

Responsibilities

  • Strive to create experiences that are relevant, thought-provoking, inclusive of multiple perspectives, emotionally intelligent and fun.
  • Opens and closes cash register, sells tickets and merchandise, and maintains associated records.
  • Assists in monitoring and securing of building and collection.
  • Performs other duties as assigned which are directly related to the major responsibilities of the job.

Requirements

  • In-depth knowledge of Black history, culture and traditions, particularly in Ontario.
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills
  • must be able to communicate with groups of mixed ages, cultures, and abilities, and with different levels of interest and knowledge.
  • Ability to provide visitor orientation and interpretation of historic contents (i.e. its collections)
  • Must have acquired a level of competence in specialized knowledge and skills and practical knowledge relating to a specific field.
  • Experience in a computerized environment with working knowledge of Word, Excel, Publisher, and Microsoft Outlook
  • Must possess initiative, good judgment and the ability to work independently, provide guidance and take leadership role when necessary.
  • Must be available on workdays, nights and weekends.
  • NOTE 1: This position requires a valid Class "G" Driver's License and proof thereof is required after hire.
  • NOTE 2: As a condition of employment, the successful applicant(s) will be required to obtain a Criminal Reference Check (Vulnerable Sector Screening), at their own expense, prior to beginning work in this position.
  • Previous and recent historical interpretation or heritage experience related to duties listed above normally acquired through a combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the diverse experiences and needs of Black communities. In-depth knowledge of Black history, culture and traditions, particularly in Ontario. Preference will be given to candidates who self-identify as Black.
  • research pertinent facts and assist in the planning, implementing and co-ordination of special events and programs. Must have acquired a level of competence in specialized knowledge and skills and practical knowledge relating to a specific field.
  • graphic design, photo and video editing, and social media skills are an asset.
  • Must possess a valid Class "G" Driver's Licence and provision of a vehicle for use on the job.
