About the role

  • Margaret Bahen Hospice, part of the Better Living family of organizations, has an opening for the position of Casual Registered Nurse.
  • This position reports to Director of Care.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in the continuous quality improvement activities of the organization in order to advance a culture of quality and support ongoing compliance with CARF Accreditation standards.
  • Assess, plan, implement and evaluate nursing care of residents according to evidence-based methods and best practices of hospice and palliative care.
  • Provides support and leadership to the interdisciplinary care team including, but not limited to, RPNs, PSWs, and volunteers.

Requirements

  • Preference given to individuals with work experience in hospice or palliative care.
  • Experience providing leadership to a transdisciplinary care team including RPNs, PSWs, volunteers, Caregivers, and other hospice team members.
  • shift or more frequently as required.
  • As determined by the transdisciplinary team, consult with Home and Community Care, community hospice and other stakeholders to ensure additional services required to meet the Resident's needs are provided.
  • Participate in transdisciplinary meetings, rounds, family conferences and committees as requested or required.

Nice to have

  • Registered and in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Baccalaureate of Science in Nursing (BScN) preferred.

Skills

  • Knowledge of, and an aptitude for, the specialty of palliative and end of life care.
  • An understanding of, and commitment to, the hospice philosophy of care.
  • Expertise in pain and symptom management.
  • Sound clinical judgement, problem solving, and decision making skills.
  • Strong assessment skills.
  • Knowledge of Palliative Performance Scale (PPS) and Edmonton Symptom Assessment (ESAS) an asset.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills required.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong clinical documentation skills.

  • Oversee the administration of medication and treatment for all Residents; implement medical interventions as required or ordered; and take primary responsibility for the medical care of Residents with high acuity.

  • Adhere to the Personal Health Information Protection Act ( PHIPA 2010) as outlined in the organization privacy policies and procedures.
  • Perform the functions of job description in compliance with the Health and Safety practices of the organization and in accordance with the provincial Occupational Health and Safety Act.
