About the role

  • This team sits within the Publishing group at the New York Times, which is responsible for the content management system for all of the Times.
  • The goal is to make the world's best journalism.

Responsibilities

  • Develop the Team: Manage a team of 6-9 backend engineers.
  • Oversee Technical Strategy: Guide the team in developing high-throughput, low-latency services and pipelines for data delivery and warehousing. Guide decisions on architecture and technology selection
  • Build and Deliver: Collaborate with different teams to define roadmaps, plan sprints, and deliver impactful projects. Ensure the team's work is aligned with broader goals.
  • Ensure Operational Excellence: Lead the reliability, scalability, and performance of the team's services. Champion monitoring, alerting, and on-call practices to maintain high availability for our critical systems.
  • Collaborate Across Boundaries: Build relationships and coordinate projects across other teams and organizations to ensure successful outcomes. Represent the team in technical discussions and communicate technical challenges and risks.
  • Collaborate with different teams to define roadmaps, plan sprints, and deliver impactful projects.
  • Lead the reliability, scalability, and performance of the team's services.
  • Champion monitoring, alerting, and on-call practices to maintain high availability for our critical systems.
  • You will report to an Engineering Director and manage a team of engineers who partner with product and project managers, data scientists, newsroom along with other partners.
  • It empowers development teams to build and evolve experiences with speed and quality.

Requirements

  • 2+ years of experience in an engineering management or people leadership role
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience as a software engineer
  • Experience with Golang, Python, Java or similar within event-driven architectures, and distributed systems at scale such as Spark or Flink

Compensation

  • For roles in the U.S., dependent on your role, you may be eligible for variable pay, such as an annual bonus and restricted stock.
  • $152,000 - $190,000 USD
