About the role

  • This position will assist in NERC, FERC, PUC and ERCOT compliance activities.
  • This position exists only in the Power Production and Electrical Services Delivery department of Austin Energy.
  • Duties, Functions and Responsibilities: Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares and/or assists in the preparation of standards, equipment specifications, design procedures, test procedures.
  • Performs and/or assists in power system studies such as protective coordination, fault studies, load flows, service reliability, power quality, voltage stability, etc.
  • Prepares or assists in engineering design and develops drawings and other documents for generation, transmission, distribution, substations and SCADA/EMS.
  • Work closely with field personnel to support project energization.
  • Knowledge of engineering design principles applicable to electric utility operations such as, generation, transmission, distribution and other related fields.
  • Ability to perform engineering calculations and analyze engineering problems
  • Under limited supervision designs, and assists in the design of electric utility system facilities, including: generation, electric substations, overhead and underground transmission and distribution lines, network systems, protection systems, supervisory control systems (SCADA), Energy Management, market operation and settlement systems, street lighting, and other electric system facilities.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in engineering may substitute for experience up to two (2) years.
  • Licenses and Certifications Required:
  • Additional work hours may be required to support the 24-hour Utility operations, which may include evenings, weekends, holidays, inclement weather and emergency closures.
  • All application steps, including attachments and submission, must be fully completed before that time.
  • Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
  • In such an emergency, Essential Employees may be called back in, may be required to modify their schedule, may be assigned to a City-designated work site, or may be retained on site to assist with operations and recovery.

Nice to have

  • Experience in Transmission Planning, including transmission level steady state, short circuit and stability analysis
  • Experience using Siemens PTI PSSE or similar software package
  • Experience in creating/ updating transmission level steady state and short circuit database updates.

  • Exempt employees are not eligible for overtime compensation.
