About the role
- Influence business and financial decisions across one of the world's leading multidisciplinary research laboratories.
- Contribute directly to the success of research that addresses some of the nation's most important scientific, energy, environmental, and national security challenges.
- Serving as the CFO's principal operational deputy and representative in matters related to BSD's overall business processes, financial management, organizational performance, and strategic initiatives.
Responsibilities
- The role ensures that business processes support the Laboratory's scientific mission through sound financial management, strong business partnerships, and consistent operational practices.
- The BOO/Deputy ALD-BSD drives continuous improvement initiatives across business functions and maintains effective communication and collaboration with key stakeholders, including Procurement, to align business operations, purchasing strategies, and service delivery with Laboratory objectives.
- Providing strategic leadership and execution by translating financial and operational priorities into actionable plans that support Laboratory objectives.
- Monitoring organizational performance and identifying risks, opportunities, and corrective actions to strengthen outcomes, enhance accountability, and support effective decision-making.
- Partnering with Associate Laboratory Directors, Directorate leadership, Program Managers, and administrative organizations to build trusted relationships and support successful program execution.
- Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of Business Operations Managers and financial professionals, fostering a culture of engagement, accountability, innovation, and professional growth while building leadership capability for the future.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Business Administration, or a related field.
- Minimum of ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience in financial or business management, budgeting, planning, or related disciplines.
- Experience advising senior leadership and presenting financial and operational information to executive audiences.
- Proficiency with financial systems, reporting tools, and data analytics platforms.
Nice to have
- Master's degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, Finance, or a related field.
- Professional certification such as CPA, CMA, CGFM, or equivalent.
- Experience within a Department of Energy environment, national laboratory, federally funded research and development center, research institution, or similarly complex organization.
- Experience leading business transformation, operational improvement, or organizational change initiatives.
- Knowledge of contractor assurance systems, enterprise risk management, internal controls, and performance-based management practices.
- Experience managing large and complex operating, capital, and project portfolios.

Compensation
- The Directorate manages a broad range of financial activities, including the planning and implementation of the Lab's fiscal matters and its approximately $900 million annual budget.
