About the role

  • The Waymo Driver powers Waymo's fully autonomous ride-hail service and can also be applied to a range of vehicle platforms and product use cases.
  • The Waymo Driver has provided over ten million rider-only trips, enabled by its experience autonomously driving over 100 million miles on public roads and tens of billions in simulation across 15+ U.S. states.
  • The Waymo Policy and Government Affairs team has a front seat in this exciting moment in the evolution of autonomous driving technology, transportation and tech policy.

Responsibilities

  • Since its start as the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, Waymo has focused on building the Waymo Driver-The World's Most Experienced Driver™-to improve access to mobility while saving thousands of lives now lost to traffic crashes.
  • Internally, our efforts support the innovative work of engineering, product, strategy, and partnerships teams, and we work closely with highly-skilled legal and safety experts.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of regional public policy managers driving state and local legislative and regulatory goals across the Western region.
  • Partner with cross-functional leaders (Legal, Communications, Product, Safety) to align policy initiatives with core business objectives and protect Waymo's freedom to operate in key markets (CA, AZ, TX).

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Public Policy, Political Science, Law, Communications, or a related field;
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in government affairs, public policy, or political advocacy, with a proven track record of managing policy issues in tech, transportation, or highly regulated sectors.
  • Expert knowledge of state and local legislative processes and political dynamics in the Western U.S., supported by a deep, established network of political stakeholders.
  • Proven experience managing substantial government affairs budgets, optimizing resources to achieve strategic policy victories.
  • Direct experience in autonomous vehicle (AV) policy, emerging mobility, or advanced technology regulation.
  • Proven track record of managing and coaching people managers or senior policy professionals.
  • Experience leading policy initiatives within a fast-growing, innovative technology company.

Compensation

  • $210,000 - $259,000 USD
  • The expected base salary range for this full-time position across US locations is listed below.
