About the role

  • The University of Maryland Department of Transportation Services is seeking an Auto Services Mechanic to join our team.
  • The Auto Services Mechanic is responsible for diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing automobiles, light- and medium-duty vehicles, and specialized equipment, including heavy-duty transit buses and motor coaches.
  • This position plays a critical role in ensuring the safe and reliable operation of the university's fleet.

Responsibilities

  • Perform maintenance and repairs on automobiles, light- and medium-duty vehicles, and specialized equipment, including heavy-duty transit buses and motor coaches that support the university community.
  • Perform comprehensive preventive and routine maintenance services, including fueling, oil changes, lubrication, cleaning, A, B, C, and D services, seasonal servicing, DOT inspections, and preventative maintenance inspections to maximize fleet reliability and longevity.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of all maintenance and repair activities, including parts used, labor hours, and vehicle scheduling.
  • Maintain tools and equipment in good working order and contribute to a clean, safe, and organized maintenance environment.
  • Support the training and development of student maintenance assistants, contributing to a collaborative and team-oriented workplace.
  • The University of Maryland's Department of Transportation Services (DOTS) delivers a wide range of parking and transportation solutions to a diverse campus community of over 50,000 students, faculty, and staff in the Greater College Park area.
  • As a self-supporting unit within the Division of Administration, DOTS manages the university's parking and transit programs.

Requirements

  • Must be able to work in, on, around, over, and under stationary vehicles.
  • Regularly required to lift, move, and manipulate heavy tools, equipment, and supplies-up to 50 lbs frequently and up to 75 lbs occasionally.
  • Must be capable of operating equipment and machinery with multiple controls simultaneously.
  • Ability to work in environments that may be hazardous or irritating, including confined spaces, extreme temperatures, and adverse weather conditions.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including safety footwear, must be worn as required and will be provided by the University.
  • The incumbent is required to supply a complete set of personal tools and a toolbox.
  • May be required to handle materials that include biohazards or bodily fluids while following appropriate safety protocols.
  • Must have a valid Maryland commercial driver's license (CDL) with a Passenger & Air Brakes endorsement or have the ability to obtain one within six months of employment.
  • Employees in this job class must possess and maintain the required driver's license with no more than five (5) points.

Nice to have

  • 2:30 PM to 11:00 PM, Monday through Friday
  • Experience working on commercial passenger transit vehicles is preferred.
  • Preferred: Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications.

Skills

  • Thorough knowledge of the proper use, care and maintenance of standard hand and power tools.
  • Skill in the proper use and maintenance of the tools and equipment of the automotive trade.
  • Skill in and ability to diagnose and correct motor vehicle malfunctions.
  • Valid Maryland Noncommercial Class A, B, and C or equivalent driver's license (CDL) or equivalent driver's license may be required.
  • May be required to be trained to work with asbestos.
  • Certification as an Automotive Service Maintenance Technician by the Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) may be required.

Compensation

  • $49,582.00 - $59,498.00
