About the role
- The Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center at Gallaudet University is a federally funded center with exemplary elementary and secondary education programs for deaf and hard of hearing students and is tasked with developing and disseminating innovative curricula, instructional techniques, and products nationwide while providing information, training, and technical assistance for parents and professionals to meet the needs of deaf and hard of hearing students from birth to age 21.

- Associate School Counselor
Responsibilities
- Provides counseling services as stated in students' IEPs; evaluates students' counseling needs and writes IEP goals; maintains and updates students' IEP progress reports; and participates in IEP meetings when counseling services are specified or requested.
- Maintains accurate confidential records and reports of counseling activities and data; and maintains appropriate counseling records on students.
- Provides assessment of student's current behavioral and socio-emotional functions; recommends intervention strategies and referrals, as needed; and maintains information and contacts with other resource agencies and services.
- Develops, implements and leads workshops and in-service training on specific topics for staff and students; and provides information and training on counseling-related areas.
- Keeps abreast of developments and issues in counseling and other related areas; and continues own personal professional development through participation in workshops, seminars, courses, in-service training, and reading.
- Engages in National Mission efforts and documents all contacts and activities.
- Establishes and maintains a positive and supportive working relationship with co-workers and supervisors.
Requirements
- Master's degree.
- Ability to communicate in American Sign Language.
- The successful candidate will undergo a background check that must be cleared prior to working at Gallaudet University.
Nice to have
- Experience working within a K-12 setting.
- OSSE School Service Provider (SSP), National Certified Counselor (NCC), DC Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), and/or Licensed Graduate Social Worker (LGSW).

- Strong ability to perform with a high degree of ethical responsibility.

- Strong knowledge of individual and group methods.
- Strong ability to work with a full range of developmental, personal, emotional, social and academic problems and concerns.
- Demonstrated experience with providing counselor services to deaf youth.
- Demonstrated ability to work with and across University departments, outside constituents and groups.
- Demonstrates a genuine commitment to belonging in the workplace and participates in activities and workshops to foster continuous learning.
- Assists in supervision and training of practicum and intern students.
- Serves as an active, contributing member of the Clerc Center community and Gallaudet University as a whole.
- Performs related and other duties as needed.
Compensation

- Salary Ranges (All Compensation Grades):
- Serves as a mandatory reporter under Title IX; and commits to completing Title IX training and other compliance requirements on an annual basis.
